Career Disruptions - seek help !

Mon Aug 21, 2023

Post pandemic a lot of people have had career disruptions. And this continues to affect certain industries even as we speak. A person who gets stuck in his/her career can go through very high levels of mental stress, due to a variety of reasons. It also adds more salt to the wound if the person has been good in academics and career pursuit. It’s a tricky scenario. Logic says that things should work out and everything should move upwards, but reality stands blocking it.

One stares at a wall and ponders:

- Why have I lost my job?

- Have I lost my relevance?

- How will I manage my CV?

- How long can I manage to pull on?

- How am I going to remain professionally astute?

- What options do I have?

- Is this going to be a permanent damage?

As a Coach I come across many such stories and have heard many such questions of desperation and anguish.

When I receive any calls from people passing through such a phase, I usually engage in a longish chat and try to break down the big problem into small logical chunks - just to help build confidence that we can all finally overcome our gloomy days. Imagine that our eyes are swelling with tears from some grief or pain. We can see almost nothing through the blur. But when someone comes and comforts us, the crying turns into a soft sob, and the tear starts to dry up as we start gaining back mental strength. And as the tears dry, the vision clears up and we slowly learn to pick ourselves up.

Breaking down a complex scenario into small manageable blocks of tasks help us make definite progress. And if we are able to control our emotions, before going into the abyss of depression, then it is also possible to simultaneously work on multiple improvement workstreams:

- Upskilling

- Networking

- Meditation

- Discovering an alternative path

As we move out of the effect of the pandemic on the economy, AI is fast approaching us as a mega disruptive storm. And there are going to me many more job-losses across sectors. It’s a warning written on the wall. Those who are able to read it, have already started anticipatory mitigation via some routes of concrete actions. Those who haven’t, must wake up, and consider at last 2 strong sets of actions:

1. Due a due diligence on yourself – a sharp one. Because there is every possibility that you have loosened your grip somewhere, on something.

2. Due a due diligence on your Industry & Sector – again a sharp one. Use some analytics and trend factoring to see where old opportunities are drying up and new ones are opening.
