Is success a myth ? An illusion ? Can you imagine a world with 100% successful individuals ? Why not ? Then whom are these books and videos meant for ? Selected audience ? Isnt this discriminatory ?
In Asia and Africa, where I have lived all my life, there are kids who do ‘shoe polish’ to earn a living. In Ethiopia, that’s a fundamental source for earning, shifted from street-begging. In India, there are those ‘tea-boys’. Now, I apply the ‘success’ model on them. Nope, its doesn’t fit. I need another model. The ‘development model’. Nope, doesn’t fit perfect yet .. !! I am seemingly confused.
Actually, I am not. A model developed in an alien society without the realms of experience, is plain useless. Hence, these ‘success’ & ‘development’ models mass-produced in the West, is not in the welfare of the entire world, even if they are believed to do so.
My biggest fear is that as a global society, we have started looking at ‘success’ as some kind of nirvana. Elusive, unclear, misunderstood, depressing and much sought after. The volume of literature, videos, advice, gurus and the likes are kind of overshadowing the total sunshine I get ! Man !!
As a part of my profession, I get to meet a lot of people. Many of them are doing well in their professional and personal life. They are balanced, happy and know what they want to do and how. That gives me peace … These are people who understand themselves, use education and experience as tools and move ahead expecting to unravel mysteries, solve problems and move forward. They are not information of system-nerds. They are good people.
I also meet people who are directionless. I wouldn’t say they are confused, they are not. They simply haven’t decided to be somebody or do something. They are the mass of followers of everything. They adapt and they just walk along.
Then there are these clusters of cultish individuals who kind of hang around together, pursuing common interests. These individuals and clusters may meet at the neighborhood pub, park or online. They are not necessarily pursuing a cause of growth or good (success mentality)
And now I hear these new terminology ‘enormously successful’. Gosh … I am really scared now. In the world of over-marketing (to demolish visible & invisible competition), you need muscles. That adverb adds punch to the adjective to achieve top scores on Amazon !!
