Pandemic Leadership Alert for Startups & Scaleups – in simple Business English!

Fri Apr 2, 2021

During the pandemic, we have been talking to dozens of Leaders across Asia and Africa – hearing their views on managing CovidTimes and their views on Recovery. These are people who own, run or manage businesses in the $10-100 million revenue space.

§ One of the prevalent behavioral outcomes that we saw coming from those conversations around CovidChallenge is that of an excuse for not being able to assess performance and thus and inability to evaluate an outcome. There was anxiety across the board.

§ Thinking through, if these Leaders ducked, it will be a very risky journey for every other soul attached to their Value-stream (s).

We were seeing that just too many leaders stuck-up in their paradigms and listening to the generic industry advice that had the loudest share of voice - Save Cash! According to us, unapologetically, that’s kindergarten business education – something that is fundamental, but definitely not sufficient to sail your boat to safe waters.

It was not the time to be perfect. And as we saw, even the best of minds was checking their notes to breathe pure Oxygen. That was a time to count and align relationships and resources, not just cash.

The Ventilator industry became a common conversation topic in the CovidTimes. Let’s look at what was happening there (with your business glasses on) :

- Ventilators aim to help those who are not able to make the best out of their natural breathing capability.

- To maintain a supply-demand balance, Ventilators were being provided to a younger Patient, evaluated to have a brighter survival outcome.

- Providing Ventilators and the ventilating environment (ICU) required Cash. So, you need to understand what is important – the Ventilator, the Cash, the Burn or the Patient that is chosen to be kept alive.

That was a time to take a closer look at your business in terms of (a) Stakeholder Relationships, (b) Value Proposition, (c) Systems (d) People Process & (e) Decision Making.

- To Run a ‘quick & honest’ Audit.

- To Make an Annual Due Diligence part of your New Routine.

STOP

- Stop giving (or allowing) Excuses from the existing Paradigm.

- Stop focusing only on CashManagement.

- Stop taking decisions alone & with fewer people.

START

- Start counting & recognizing ALL your Resources.

- Reinvent the decision-making process.

- Discover your Winning Leadership trait – make it 500% more dynamic & invincible

Once you’ve found your bearing, ask ‘how?’ and you will have your answers for the Post pandemic recovery phase.

Be the Great Leader that you are ….
